MAUI, Hawaii--(BUSINESS WIRE)--#BeReelFilmFestival<\/a>--Maui-based philanthropist Ed Freedman and his Stable Road Foundation were honored to provide Maui families with a surprise showing of Georgia Scott\u2019s award-winning ocean documentary KULEANA<\/i> at the first annual Be Reel Child & Youth Film Festival, presented by Imua Family Services.<\/p><\/a><\/a>

\nThe Memorial Day weekend festival was held at the historic Iao Theater in downtown Wailuku and attended by hundreds of Maui residents. Featuring films for and by the island\u2019s keiki<\/i>, the Be Reel Film Festival<\/a> spotlighted the issues most important to Maui\u2019s young people, such as environmental responsibility and cultural preservation.<\/p>

\nAlong with KULEANA<\/i>, highlights included All the Things I Leave You<\/i> from director Jade Castro (written and produced by Maui local Lance Collins), Pu\u2019u Kukui: The Hill of Enlightenment <\/i>from Hawaii-based filmmaker Ricky-Thomas Serikawa, and The Queen\u2019s Flowers<\/i>, directed by Emmy-winning Native Hawaiian filmmaker Ciara Lacy.<\/p>

\n\u201cWe\u2019ve been proud to support Imua\u2019s mission for nearly a decade now,\u201d said Freedman, founder of Stable Road Foundation<\/a>. \u201cWhen we saw an opportunity to bring KULEANA<\/i> to the festival, we knew we had to make it happen. The film speaks directly about the issues shaping Maui kids\u2019 futures\u2014these two partners might seem like they\u2019re from different worlds, but we recognized a powerful connection between them.\u201d<\/p>

\nKULEANA<\/i><\/a>, narrated by Woody Harrelson and featuring Maui luminaries like surfer Kai Lenny, was hailed as a \u201cvisually stunning\u201d exploration of the plastic pollution crisis facing the world\u2019s oceans. Earlier this year, KULEANA<\/i> won the Audience Choice Award at the Skyfire Environmental Film Festival, as well as the Producer Vision Award at the Blue Water Film Festival.<\/p>
