Yet fewer than one in five companies studied report achieving meaningful AI ROI—a gap Christian & Timbers argues reflects a critical shortage of the elite engineers capable of delivering it.

Christian & Timbers defines this group as elite Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs)—the rare engineers who have repeatedly embedded inside enterprises, deployed AI into production and delivered measurable business outcomes. While roughly 17,000 FDEs exist in the United States, the firm estimates only about 2,000 qualify as elite because they have consistently translated AI deployments into documented business value.

"After speaking directly with more than 250 C-suite executives across 180 companies and more than 300 AI engineers over the past six months, we came away with one overwhelming conclusion," said Jeff Christian, founder of Christian & Timbers. "Companies don't have an AI problem. They have a talent problem. There are only about 2,000 people in America who've repeatedly proven they can walk into an enterprise, deploy AI into production and deliver measurable ROI. Every major company is now considering whether to or competing for that same extraordinarily small talent pool."

The findings arrive as the largest AI companies accelerate investments in enterprise deployment. Microsoft recently announced its $2.5 billion Frontier initiative, AWS launched a $1 billion forward-deployed AI initiative, OpenAI introduced a dedicated enterprise deployment organization, and Anthropic created “Ode with Anthropic” in partnership with Blackstone and other investors to expand enterprise AI services. Christian & Timbers estimates these and other initiatives represent 8,500 to 10,000 additional hiring needs not yet reflected in public job-posting data, accelerating competition for one of the scarcest talent pools in technology.

The report, America's Most Wanted Enterprise AI Talent, examines why enterprise AI deployments succeed or fail, the emergence of the elite Forward Deployed Engineer, and the growing disconnect between AI investment and measurable business outcomes.

Additional Findings

Only about 2,000 elite Forward Deployed Engineers exist in the United States despite an estimated population of more than 17,000 FDEs overall.

Fewer than one in five companies studied are achieving meaningful AI ROI through agentic AI deployments.

Only about one percent of companies surveyed have deployed AI systems that generated or protected more than $100 million in value.

Nearly 80% of the elite FDE talent pool traces its professional lineage to Palantir.

Companies are shifting from AI pilot teams of two or three engineers to permanent deployment organizations of 20 to more than 100 Forward Deployed Engineers.

Methodology

Unlike traditional surveys, the study combines executive interviews with direct mapping of the U.S. Forward Deployed Engineer market. Over six months, Christian & Timbers researchers mapped more than 17,000 U.S. FDEs using LinkedIn research, professional networks, direct outreach and verified deployment histories. The firm then applied two independent methodologies—including analysis of more than 300 engineers—to estimate the elite tier. Both approaches produced essentially the same result: approximately 2,000 engineers capable of consistently delivering enterprise AI ROI.

The research draws on interviews with more than 250 C-suite hiring executives across 180 companies, a focused survey of 80 Fortune 500 executives, interviews with more than 300 Forward Deployed Engineers and Applied AI engineers, and six months of proprietary talent intelligence conducted between January and June 2026.

The full study is available at christianandtimbers.com/elite-fde-scarcity-study.

About Christian & Timbers

Christian & Timbers is the leading AI executive search and leadership advisory firm, recruiting transformational CEOs, board members, technology executives and elite AI engineers for the world’s most innovative enterprises.
