However, newly released data reveal that the aviation sector continues to pose a significant challenge to that ambition. Tokyo's Haneda Airport emitted <b>10.8 million tonnes of CO\u2082 in 2023<\/b>, ranking 16th globally. When combined with Narita, which emitted 9 million tonnes, the greater Tokyo metropolitan area's total reaches <b>19.8 million tonnes \u2014 the 4th highest among urban areas worldwide<\/b>. The updated tracker covers <b>1,300 airports worldwide<\/b> and reveals that <b>Asia-Pacific now accounts for 32% of global aviation CO\u2082 emissions<\/b> \u2014 the highest of any region and more than Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa combined.<\/p><p>\nGlobally, the top 100 airports are responsible for approximately two-thirds of all passenger aviation emissions, while just 2.3% of all airports have Scope 3 net-zero plans in place.
