CAFC Marks Second Anniversary with Launch of CAPFC™ Certification, Establishing a New Standard for AI Governance in Financial Crime
First-of-its-kind certification equips financial crime professionals to govern, oversee and validate AI systems as regulatory expectations accelerate worldwide

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Coalition Against Financial Crime (CAFC) today announced the launch of the Certified AI Practitioner in Financial Crime (CAPFC™), the industry’s first professional certification dedicated to AI governance within financial crime compliance programs. The launch coincides with CAFC’s second anniversary and marks a major milestone in the evolution of responsible AI oversight across the global financial services sector.
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, fraud detection, investigations and suspicious activity reporting workflows, financial institutions face growing pressure to ensure these systems are governed responsibly, validated effectively and aligned with evolving regulatory expectations. CAPFC was created to address this critical gap by preparing professionals to oversee AI-enabled compliance systems with confidence, accountability and regulatory rigor.
Developed in collaboration with a global network of Chief Compliance Officers, BSA Officers, model risk specialists, AI engineers, data scientists and financial crime practitioners, CAPFC combines regulatory expectations, governance frameworks and real-world implementation experience into a practical certification program for today’s compliance leaders.
“Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming how financial institutions detect and combat financial crime, but technology alone is not enough,” said John C. Calderon, Founder and Chair of CAFC. “Effective governance is what turns innovation into trust. CAPFC establishes a new benchmark for professionals responsible for overseeing AI systems in high-risk compliance environments.”
The certification is designed for senior and mid-level financial crime professionals responsible for implementing, governing, validating or overseeing AI systems within compliance programs. The curriculum addresses AI fundamentals, model risk management, validation, human oversight, regulatory expectations, transaction monitoring, suspicious activity reporting, sanctions screening, fraud detection and ethical considerations in AI deployment.
The inaugural cohort, made up of practitioners from across the financial services industry, has already begun the program, with early feedback highlighting its immediate relevance to the governance challenges facing compliance teams today.
Founded in 2024, CAFC serves more than 5,000 financial crime professionals through education, certification, thought leadership and industry collaboration.
